Today Energy Minister Martin Ferguson has announced the Government is walking away from its promise to shut down our dirtiest, oldest coal power stations.
When the Government introduced a carbon price – they also promised to shut down 2000MW of our dirtiest coal plants (one big plant, and two small ones). Now they say that negotiations have broken down.
This is just not good enough!
Money from this ‘contracts for closure’ policy would have helped to replace the coal power plants in Port Augusta with our first solar thermal plants.
We demand they go back to the negotiating table, and get this done.
Call key members of Cabinet today, to express your disappointment.
Step 1: Call Gillard, Combet or Ferguson (or all three!)
Prime Minister Gillard (02) 6277 7700
Martin Ferguson (02) 6277 7930
Greg Combet (02) 6277 7920
We’ve put together some pointers for you so don’t worry if this is your first call to a politician’s office, it’s easier than you think.
Step 1:Keep calm and put a smile on.
The Prime Minister and Minister Ferguson needs to hear that the community wants renewable energy. You’re doing a great thing!
Step 2: Explain who you are and why you’re calling.
For example you could say: “Hi, my name is … from … , I am extremely disappointed that the government has today walked away from its commitment to close 2000MW of our dirtiest coal power stations.”
Step 3: Add extra information if you get the chance:
– This puts at risk a major opportunity to start replacing coal with solar at places like Port Augusta;
– The government needs to go back to the negotiations immediately and recommit to shutting our dirtiest coal fire power stations
Thank you and good luck!
