This poor outcome, was set in stone from the word "go". You are almost certainly to young to remember "The Club of Rome's" commissioned treatise "The Limit of Growth", very interesting reading, even nowadays. The real shame is that many will have an excuse not to change their energy-intensive behaviour individually, since even the governments are not coming to a consensus. Again K Rudd, and esp J Brumby will have free reign with those half-baked policies (deforastation, desal, clean-coal technologies) I hope you had time to visit "Christiania", a little oasis, which would be unthinkable in Australia.
