500 young Australians held a rally in Bendigo this week to mark International Youth Day. Students from six local schools marked International Youth Day’s theme, Youth and Climate Change: Time for Action, by taking part in a walk from the Tom Flood Sports Centre to the Civic Gardens. Each student held a black balloon to represent climate change. The walk was organised by the Bendigo Regional YMCA, Lead On and the City of Greater Bendigo.
In other news, the AYCC has had a good week as we start following up from national council, developing our workplans for the next few weeks, and a have few new volunteers like Jodi settling in. Last night the AYCC delegation to the UN climate talks in Poznan had a productive meeting; their planning is going really well. Jarra continues to improve the website; the campaigns working group is having strategy day tomorrow; and our next national council will be the week of September 1st (by phone). Amanda was on Channel 10′s “Nine AM” morning show this morning, and Ben is doing Switched On Schools work. We also have a guest in the office today – Scarlet – who is doing follow-up legal work for the people arrested at Climate Camp – around 53 got fines and 12 arrested. Climate Camp was in Newcastle in July, a mass protest against the expansion of the Hunter Valley coal industry. We also heard great reports this week from our friends in the UK who had their own Climate camp recently!
